God’s Garden: Majesty and Grace
For our first Garden Devotional, we will be reading a beautiful poem by Dorothy Frances Gurney titled “God’s Garden.” I actually have an excerpt of this poem on a decorative sign in one of my flower beds.
I love this poem because it so perfectly captures God’s majesty, His beautiful creation, and His redemptive plan for each of us; even before the first bud or bloom ever appeared on the earth.
We know that God is omnipresent, and I am certain that if you spoke to any gardener in your life, they would tell you of the deep and profound ways they have communed with God and experienced His presence amongst their fruit, vegetable, and flower beds. I know I certainly have. In fact, I was so moved by the Spirit while watering my Zinnias several summers ago that I baptized myself with a garden hose right there in the backyard.

God’s Garden: A Metaphor For Our Spiritual Lives
The garden not only reminds us of our Creator, the Master Gardener who planted the first garden in Eden, in the east, and put the man He had formed there (Genesis 2:8), but it is also a powerful metaphor for our spiritual lives—reflecting the care, growth, and patience required in our faith.
Thankfully, we work in tandem with the Vine Dresser (John 15:1), who is present and at work in every season—pruning, training, and cultivating as He nourishes us with His immutable Truth. He is so faithful in His continual tending of us, always working for our good and for His glory and splendor.
A garden requires diligence and care—consistent watering, weeding, and attention to what thrives and what hinders growth. Isn’t that also true of our walk with The Lord? Left untended, weeds of distraction, doubt, and worldly concerns creep in, choking out what is meant to flourish. But when we yield to the loving hands of the Gardener, He uproots what doesn’t belong and strengthens what does. Just as the soil must be turned and prepared, so must our hearts be softened and cultivated to receive His Word and bear fruit in due season.
I pray this poem encourages you to slow down, step into God’s creation wherein His divine nature is evident, and notice His presence and His handiwork in the soil and in your soul.

God’s Garden: By- Dorothy Frances Gurney
The Lord God planted a garden. In the first white days of the world. And He set there an angel warden. In a garment of light enfurled. So near to the peace of Heaven. That the hawk might nest with the wren. For there in the cool of the even. God walked with the first of men. And I dream that these garden-closes. With their shade and their sun-flecked sod. And their lilies and bowers of roses. Were laid by the hand of God. The kiss of the sun for pardon. The song of the birds for mirth. One is nearer God’s heart in a garden. Than anywhere else on earth. For He broke it for us in a garden. Under the olive-trees. Where the angel of strength was the warden. And the soul of the world found ease

God’s Garden: Intentions and Prayer
Thank you for spending this time with me ‘from the garden.’ As I continue sharing these devotionals, my hope is that they will be a space to pause, reflect, and pray—drawing on both scripture and the quiet lessons found in God’s creation.
While much of my writing is contemplative, these devotionals will be simple offerings of thoughts, prayers, and sometimes journaling prompts—little seeds of faith to nurture along the way. I’m still shaping what this space will look like, but I pray it blesses you. Thank you for being here.
A Prayer: Lord, thank You for the beauty of Your creation and the way You speak through it. May our hearts be like good soil, ready to receive Your word and bear fruit in due season. Help us to grow in faith, to trust Your timing, and to tend to the seeds of truth You plant in our lives. Amen.
Journaling Prompt: What is God planting in your heart this season? Leave your comment below. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
